As It Was In The Beginning
Those familiar with the history of the Gospel Church will know that from its earliest days it has always taken a keen interest in the social and spiritual life of children and young people, and so it is today with a rich variety of regular activities on Sunday mornings and Friday evenings in particular.
The Women’s fellowship has also thrived over many, many years, and is still going strong.
The ladies’ informal Bible discussion groups, monthly coffee mornings and craft afternoons on Wednesdays are very much woven into the fabric of our church life, with newcomers always welcome.
But what about men?
What has MGC offered in the past? What has it to offer them now?
Well, reminiscing with friends recently, I was reminded about the time during World War 2 when our old building was opened seven days a week, fifty two weeks a year, ministering especially to men.
Those men were the soldiers of the Royal Engineers and Pioneer Corps engaged on building the initial stages of our military railway and port.
Living in primitive conditions under canvas in the fields and woodlands opposite our parish church, they looked for a warm dry, well lighted place where they could relax, have a cuppa and write a letter home, and word got around that our small church was that place.
Now in 2009, what is on offer for men is first of all their favourite meal, the Men’s Breakfast, on the first Saturday of the month.
Our ‘Chef’ is a fireman, but that does not mean burnt offerings, rather the full works as enjoyed by many a fireman at the end of a hard night shift.
And then when fully replete, time to enjoy a short talk given by men with a good tale to tell based on their own experiences.
But that is not all!
On the third Wednesday evening of the month there is a whole range of social events held sometimes at the church, and sometimes at other locations.
So, whether its children’s, men or women’s social and spiritual activities we can truly say as it was in the beginning so it is today, only better.
Those wartime soldiers could only find out what was on offer by word of mouth, today David our Pastor is only a phone call away (023 8066 7901), and our website (www.gospelchurchmarchwood.org.uk) is at everyone’s finger tips, so why not find out more? |
